Mardi dernier se déroulait la seconde rencontre du PBC-MTL. Nous avons eu droit à une très belle sélection de livres (voir les livre des livre ICI) dont plusieurs n’étaient pas très connus. Un livre qui a fait discuter, Pierdom de Simon Roberts, où il fut question de comparer le séquençage et la plus grande variété des images présentent dans le livre, avec l’édit beaucoup plus resseré et typologique mis en ligne avant la publication.
Le livre Rasen Kaigan du photographe japonais Lieko Shiga, a lui aussi beaucoup fait jasé. Dans cet ouvrage acclamé par la critique (best photobook 2013 sur photo-eye), Shiga nous montre des images de rituels, de performances, le tout dans une ambiance sombre et onirique. En fait, ce livre de grand format assez atypique a suscité plusieurs réactions intéressantes, et notamment autour de la confrontation des cultures et les possibles erreurs et pistes d’interprétations.
Un ouvrage apprécié de tous les participants fut Haunted Air d’Ossian Brown, tant par la qualité du livre en tant qu’object, que par l’absence d’informations et de légendes, laissant place à l’interprétation et à l’imaginaire de chacun.
Au point de vu des découvertes nous devons mentionner: East to East de Klavdij Sluban, Tokoyo no Mushi de Yoshiichi Hara et A visit with Magritte de Duane Michaels, un petit journal intimiste d’une rencontre avec Magritte.

Last Thuesday was the second meeting of the PBC-MTL. We got a quite diverse and interesting books line up (you can see the complet list HERE) composed of not so common publications. A book that has been largely discussed, Pierdom by Simon Roberts, where the sequencing and the variety of images presented in the book have been compared, with the much more tight and typological edit posted online before publication.
The book Rasen Kaigan by Japanese photographer Lieko Shiga, has also been widely discussed. In this critically acclaimed book (best photobook 2013 on photo-eye), Shiga shows us images of rituals and performances, all in a dark and dreamlike atmosphere. Actually, this unusual and large size book has brought to the table the subject of cultures clash and the possible error in the interpretation of the work due to the lack of knowledge of the japanese social code and culture.
A book appreciated by all participants was Haunted Air by Ossian Brown, both by the quality of the book as an object, and the lack of information and descriptions, leaving room for everyone’s interpretation and imagination.
A few discoveries worth mentioning are: Klavdij Sluban’s East to East, Yoshiichi Hara’s Tokoyo no Mush and Duane Michaels’s A visit with Magritte, an personnal account of his encounter with the surrealist painter Magritte.
